I wouldn’t go as far as to call my self a foodie. In fact, I’m not an adventurous eater at all! But when I came across Food Tours Vienna and their itinerary of food and wine, I couldn’t say no!

Coming into a new country is always an exciting thing. Ordering your first meal is an experience in itself. Especially when you can’t speak the language and have no idea what you’re even ordering. It’s like a game of roulette… You never know what you’re gonna get. I love it!

And while that’s all fun and games, it’s also great to familiarise yourself with the local food in the way of a food tour. Vienna, Austria has a lot to offer with many different foods like breads, chocolates, and meats, and that’s why I recommend doing a food tour while in Vienna. Do it within your first few days here, and you’ll be a pro when it comes to the food for the rest of your stay!

Food Tours Vienna review

As I mentioned before, I took the tour with Food Tours Vienna. It’s a one man show, all run by Lukas. He’s a chef and has an absolute passion for food. We were lucky enough to have the tour to ourselves that day, so we learned a lot about how he started Food Tours Vienna.

Side note: the tour will run no matter how few people are booked in to it. There is no ‘minimum requirement’ of people, so it will run no matter what as long as you have booked yourself in.

During the tour we tried locally sourced meats, freshly baked breads, chocolates, cheeses, and wines. I had never had a ‘bread tasting’ before as I usually stick to the wine tastings, but it was quite interesting to learn about what makes up the different breads.

We also did an oil and vinegar tasting; another thing I had never done before (many new things were tried on this day as you learn on our video of the tour haha). In this market store, you can purchase some oils and vinegars to take home with you. They would make great gifts for family or friends who have a passion in the kitchen too.

The tour runs for about 4 hours and honestly, we ate and drank so much during this time. I didn’t eat before the tour, and I didn’t need to eat afterwards either. The value is outstanding. For example, the wine tasting segment was like no other tasting I had done before. There were 3 different wines, and for each wine, we were given a full glass. So I suggest to not eat too much before the tour. Have a light breakfast if need be, but definitely leave enough room for all the delicious things you’ll try throughout the day!

I don’t want to recap the entire tour; you can watch the video of it here if you like. Or just wait for a surprise on the day!

Food Tours Vienna Review

Here are a few of my highlights from the tour with Food Tours Vienna:

  • Trying new foods I never thought I would try such as cow tongue and horse… HORSE!!!
  • The wine tasting. The wines were delicious and the pours were super generous 😉
  • The cheese selection. A selection of cheeses from goat, sheep, and cow. All amazing!
  • Vinegar and oil tasting. This opened me up to the world of oils and vinegars. I had no clue there were so many different types and how great they can taste.
  • Walking through the beautiful city of Vienna and the food markets with a local. You can learn so much about the city when you are with a passionate local.

I totally recommend having Lukas as your guide with Food Tours Vienna, he and his tour made our trip here so much more memorable. The day was blast and it was a great start to our time in Austria.

Enjoy your time in Vienna!

I was fortunate enough to be invited on this tour by Food Tours Vienna. This in no way affects my recommendation of their tour. All opinions stated in this post are my own, and I couldn’t recommend them more highly.

  1. How amazing!! I remember the schnapps museum 😂 Food is a main part of traveling, I love this post. The craziest thing I’ve ever eaten is either balls of a bull or piranha, I think. Thanks for the info, Hannah!

  3. I’ve never been to Vienna but I’d definitely consider a food tour if I do visit. Sounds like the wine tasting was particularly generous – I like!

  4. I would do it in a blink 😍 I am considering doing it in Hong Kong next weekend – just have to search the internet some more 😁
